Rochester Freedom School Methodology
The methods of the Freedom School are designed to foster growth in nine areas of socio-cultural learning, which have been found to be effective in increasing academic achievement with students of color (Allen & Boykin, 1992; Ladson-Billings, 1995). By providing experiences that connect academic learning with the strengths families and communities offer, Freedom School incorporates the funds of knowledge that families bring to school (González et al., 2006) into the total school program. A key component of the program is building learning communities that offer a sense of safety, love, caring, and personal power that lead to transformative education. The program focuses on: (1) literacy, using culturally relevant high-quality books and materials; (2) encouraging children to dream, set high goals and expectations, and cultivate positive attitudes; (3) wholesome nutrition; (4) civic engagement and social action; (5) developing non-violent conflict resolution skills; (6) connecting families with health care and other resources; (7) engaging youth in music, cheers, and chants that have positive affirmations. The school works with youth to develop a positive life outcome. Table 4.1 illustrates the activities and curriculum principles used to achieve each of the programâs nine areas of learning and the programâs focus areas.
